Inside the Ascent 2000W Handheld Fiber Laser Welder

The Ascent 2000W handheld fiber laser welder is built for shops that care about weld speed, weld appearance, and keeping the machine running all shift. For a good share of jobs it is a real alternative to MIG welding.

Where laser beats MIG

Ascent's welder handles stainless steel, carbon steel, galvanized steel and aluminum in thin and medium gauges, and its welds come out faster, cleaner and more precise than a standard MIG weld. After 3-4 hours of qualified training from an Ascent technician, an operator who has never welded aluminum can weld very thin aluminum. The operator remains responsible for completing the required training, following approved process controls and meeting every laser-safety requirement.

The beam is so concentrated that the weld stays narrow and controlled while less heat spreads into the surrounding metal. In practice you see:

  • Faster travel speeds
  • Deep, even penetration
  • Less warping and distortion
  • Less discoloration and very little spatter
  • Smaller, tidier seams
  • Far less grinding, polishing and other post-weld work

MIG still has its place on heavy fabrication, wide gaps, and parts that don't fit together precisely. When the priorities are appearance, speed, precision and less finishing time, though, the laser gives you a real production advantage.

Refrigeration cooling

Instead of basic air cooling, the 2000W uses a refrigeration heat pump with two circuits and an inverter drive. No water is needed. Holding temperatures steady through long runs protects the components that matter most. What that gets you:

  • Steady laser output through continuous production
  • Consistent welding performance and penetration
  • Reliable running anywhere from −20°C to +60°C (−4°F to +140°F)
  • A 100% duty cycle; no scheduled cooling breaks
  • Longer component life, thanks to controlled operating temperatures
  • Energy use 60% lower than other cooling systems, according to Ascent

The whole cooling platform is designed for demanding, high-volume production.

High-speed wobble head

The wobble head sweeps the beam rapidly across the joint to produce a wider, more controllable seam. Operators can weld faster and still get strong, uniform results, and the wobble pattern is adjustable to suit different materials, joint types and weld widths.

A torch you can hold all day

A torch that feels fine for a few minutes can become a burden over a whole shift. The Ascent torch weighs just 1.32 pounds (600 grams), which means:

  • Less fatigue in the hand, wrist, arm and shoulder
  • Better control and accuracy
  • Easier reach into corners and tight spots
  • More comfortable vertical and overhead work
  • More output over long shifts
  • A shorter learning curve for new operators

For longer reach, Ascent offers an optional 15-meter (49-foot) torch cable, so operators can work around large cabinets, frames and assemblies without repeatedly moving the welder.

More than a machine

A laser welder's long-term value depends on more than the hardware: cooling performance, torch design, the accessories supplied, training and dependable technical support all count. The 2000W covers each of these. Cooling is a refrigeration heat pump with two circuits. The torch weighs 600 grams, the wobble head is very fast, and the unit is rated for 100% continuous duty. The wire feeder runs a single wire or two wires. Installation and operator training at your facility are included in the price, the welder has a 2-year parts-and-labor warranty, and remote technical support continues for the life of the machine.

Many suppliers simply ship a machine. Ascent also helps you install it, teaches your operators to run it safely, tunes the welding settings and helps fit it into production. With support coming from Buffalo, Toronto and Kentucky, help is never far away.

What's in the box

  • Automatic wire feeder for a single wire or two wires
  • 1.2mm aluminum welding wire (one spool)
  • A trolley that carries the welder and the argon tank together
  • Laser welding helmet and laser safety glasses
  • Laser welding nozzles in assorted sizes
  • Spare protective lenses for the torch

The Ascent 2000W pairs the speed of modern laser welding with the stability of refrigeration cooling, backed by local training and support. A handheld laser welder is a Class 4 laser, so plan the work area with our laser safety guidance.
